Working in partnership with leading technology magazine WIRED, software giant Adobe Systems has this week unveiled the WIRED Reader, a digital viewing app designed specifically to enable print publishers to bring their magazines to life through portable handheld devices.

Created with Adobe InDesign Creative Suite 5 (CS5), the WIRED Reader delivers full-colour and dynamic interactive magazine content, which includes the display of video clips for features and advertising, slideshows, 360-degree images, and the rotation of content in vertical and horizontal viewing modes.

“Adobe’s work with WIRED has resulted in a digital magazine format that creates an immersive experience, allowing a publication’s unique content, look and feel and advertising to stand out in the digital realm,” commented David Burkett, vice president and general manager as Adobe’s Creative Solutions.

“We aim to make our digital viewer software available to all publishers soon and plan to deliver versions that work across multiple hardware platforms,” he added. “It’s safe to say that if you are already working in InDesign CS5, you’ll be well on your way to producing a beautiful digital version of your publication.”

Promising to re-create “the design fidelity of a print magazine,” Adobe and WIRED’s platform perfectly suits small-form tablet and smartphone devices (an iPad version already exists) and boasts a gesture-based interface and a handy zoomed-out browse mode for viewing issue content at a glance.

Got an iPad and want to sample the June edition of WIRED magazine in a full-colour digital format? You can do so by downloading the WIRED Reader from Apple’s iTunes App Store for just $4.99 USD.
