With the increasingly popular Android operating system holding sway over rivals in the U.S. smartphone market, newly released research suggests Google’s mobile platform is also enjoying similar success in the United Kingdom.

That’s according to a Q3 study conducted by Kantar Wordpanel ComTech, which has found that almost 50 percent of all U.K. smartphone devices are now powered by Android.

Taking a closer look at the figures, Android currently enjoys a dominant 49.9 percent of the market across the pond, while the BlackBerry OS sits in second with 22.5 percent and Apple’s iOS rounds out the top three with 18.5 percent.

Of course, it’s worth noting that Android is prevalent in the marketplace thanks to usage across numerous device makers such as HTC with 44.8 percent regional coverage and Samsung with 37.9 percent. Other Android supporters include the likes of Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

Meanwhile, iPhone maker Apple and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion are strictly limited where coverage is concerned due to their respective software platforms being exclusively placed.

The research does not factor in recent momentum attributed to the launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S handset.
