We here at Tech Herald Towers have long since labeled Google's Android operating system as “increasingly popular”. However, from now on we'll be slapping words such as “market leader” and “dominant” before Google's market-leading and dominant software.
That's mainly because research specialist Canalys has this week revealed that the Android platform now holds pride of place on almost 50 percent of all smartphone devices around the world.
Looking closer at the international figures collated by Canalys, Android is the preferred mobile operating system in 35 of the 56 countries in which it is tracked—which equates to a global market share of 48 percent.
Meanwhile, the comparative market share of Apple's iconic iPhone sits at 19 percent. But it should be noted that percentage is attributed to a single handset manufacturer, while Android is available via the likes of HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung.
In related news, market research from Nielsen shows that 39 percent of multi-manufacturer smartphones run Google Android in the U.S. and Apple enjoys a greater share of 28 percent, which is likely influenced by the Cupertino-based company's home-field advantage.
