In what appears to be a reaction to recent reports suggesting Android is losing momentum, Google vice president of engineering Andy Rubin has said that the search giant’s mobile operating system remains a growing force within the smartphone marketplace.

Furthermore, although recent figures from Apple seem to indicate that Google still has some way to go before Android overhauls the iPhone iOS, Rubin’s comments via Twitter suggest Android has actually overtaken the iOS.

“There are 300,000 Android phones activated each day,” said Rubin on the popular micro-blogging site. If Rubin’s figure is accurate, Android’s daily activation rate actually exceeds the 270,000 activation average Apple boss Steve Jobs offered up in October.

Somewhat oddly, however, Rubin’s comments come only a matter of days after Google said the weekly rate of Android activations presently stands at 1.5 million, which equates to around 214,000 daily activations—and a shortfall of some 86,000.
