The popularity of Apple’s App Store shows no signs of abating after the Cupertino-based gadget giant revealed this week that its online portal has now surpassed 25 billion downloads.

“A billion thanks. 25 times over,” Apple trumpeted via its official website. “The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there.”

In order to commemorate hitting such a landmark figure, Apple said it intends to announce the identity of the person responsible for downloading the 25th billion app within 10 days.

Beyond being thrust into the limelight, that lucky individual will receive a $10,000 USD App Store gift certificate.

In terms of assessing the ongoing strength of the App Store, it has taken the virtual store just nine months to surge from 15 billion downloads to 25 billion downloads.

According to a Telenav report from August of 2011, iOS users are twice as likely as Android users to spend $40 USD on apps for the mobile devices.

The report also found that 45 percent of iOS users have never paid more than $1 USD for an app, while that figure pushes to 62 percent for Android users, and 63 percent for BlackBerry users.
