When describing Apple’s line of MacBook computers, the words ‘low cost’ probably wouldn’t be first choice by way of adequate description. Yet, while you might opt for ‘reassuringly expensive’ or ‘trendily desirable’ to help carve out the MacBook, mounting rumour suggests ‘low cost’ might soon become something more than a PC-owner’s pipedream.

Indeed, if current online whispers are to be believed, Cupertino-based computer and gadget specialist Apple Inc. is on the cusp of unleashing a pocket-friendly polycarbonate MacBook that will add more widespread consumer appeal to its hitherto highly priced hardware platform.

According to unnamed sources cited by industry watchers at Apple Insider, a formal announcement regarding the revised portable is expected to be issued before the close of October.

The report also offers that the cut-price MacBook line will be “the most affordable notebook offerings in the Mac maker’s history,” which suggests some way below the $999 USD bracket.

It’s currently not known by how much Apple will drop its prices, whether the new MacBook line will favour performance over energy efficiency, or whether it will come equipped with established Intel processors or cheaper AMD chips.

Other Mac-based rumours currently doing the rounds point to Apple also preparing tantalisingly revised price points for its line of iMac computers – with any and all low-cost hardware arrivals heading for a retail release that competes with the arrival of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.
