After several years of market-leading success, Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has moved to expand its base of operations in Silicon Valley by snapping up a 98-acre campus that formally housed Hewlett-Packard (HP).
According to real estate experts speaking to The Mercury News, Jobs and Co. are likely to have paid somewhere in the vicinity of $300 million for the expansion that lies adjacent to another 50-acre campus purchased by Apple in 2006.
Beyond its original offices at 1 Infinite Loop, Apple now owns approximately 60 other buildings throughout the Cupertino area, which, according to city officials, has seen the gadget giant become California's largest landowner.
“We now occupy 57 buildings in Cupertino and our campus is bursting at the seams,” commented Apple spokesman Steve Dowling. “These offices will give us more space for our employees as we continue to grow.”
Hewlett-Packard had used the campus for around 20 years before abandoning the office complex during the summer of 2010 to consolidate its business operations in Palo Alto.
