Given the exposure and popularity afforded the hardware range packing out Apple’s gadgetry portfolio over the last 12 months, it is perhaps unsurprising to see the Cupertino-based consumer electronics specialist beating off all-comers during this week’s very first British Technology Awards.
Announced by magazine publisher Incisive Media and compiled by votes registered by the general public and readers of Computeractive and Personal Computer World, Apple’s iconic iPhone smartphone emerged carrying most top honours after securing a total of four awards, including the coveted Gadget of the Year gong.
Other awards bestowed upon Apple’s hugely popular touch-screen handset included Best Mobile Technology, Technological Innovation of the Year and Most Stylish Technology. Apple Inc. was also given the nod for its iTunes Store, which won Best Music Technology.
Held to provide a glimpse at the nation’s technological obsessions over the previous year, the British Technology Awards also honoured the BBC’s online catch-up service iPlayer with Best Home Entertainment Technology and Best Online Technology, while Japanese gaming titan Nintendo nabbed Best Gaming Technology for its innovative Wii home console, and also Best Kids Technology for its market-leading Nintendo DS.
“We’ve got to the heart of the nation’s technological obsession, and identified what gadgets we love, covert and cherish,” enthused Dylan Armbrust, Group Publishing Director at Incisive Media. “It’s been a brilliant year not just for all our winners -- particularly Apple, the BBC and Nintendo -- but technology as a whole.”
Other notable winners included Google Maps, which was deemed cream of the crop in the Most Indispensable Technology category, while the diminutive ASUSTeK Eee PC Netbook computer scooped the Business Technology of the Year award.
Unlike the British Technology Awards, the ultra-portable Eee PC recently beat Apple’s iPhone to the Gadget of the Year title during a similar session of gong-heavy indulgence held by leading tech magazine Stuff.
