Following on from Amazon’s festive boast regarding sales of its popular Kindle reader, it has now emerged that Apple’s iPhone handset enjoyed an especially strong year via online auction service eBay.
According to eBay’s annually published list of ‘Top Shopped’ products, more than 1.63 million iPhone units were sold during 2010, beating out the challenge of toy doll Barbie, which amassed 1.17 million sales throughout the year.
The top-five eBay products of 2010 were rounded out by fashion must-have Military Jackets, which placed third, while classic Hot Wheels toys and the Apple iPad tablet computer (621,000) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Apple’s impressive traction on eBay crowns another strong year for the Cupertino-based giant, which recently saw its iPad named Time magazine’s gadget of 2010.
It’s groundbreaking tablet computer also led the way on micro-blogging service Twitter where tech-related trending was concerned.
Other popular eBay items and/or related products in 2010 covered the World Cup (i.e., vuvuzelas), The Beatles, Silly Bandz, Alice in Wonderland and the New Orleans Saints.
Earlier this week, online retailer Amazon announced that persistent sales momentum of its third-generation Kindle had seen the device become the best-selling product on its virtual shelves.
