Only second best? Image: Apple.

As Apple prepares to release its anticipated iPhone 5, it’s likely that Jobs & Co. will be pleased to note that its smartphone iOS operating system has now eclipsed that of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM).

That’s according to comScore’s latest U.S. market share report, which has said Apple’s iOS platform is up 1.4 percent to 26.6 percent, while the BlackBerry operating system slipped more than four points to 24.7 percent.

While Apple and RIM are busy doing battle for second place in the smartphone market, neither are presently able to haul back market leader Google as more and more consumers adopt devices powered by the open-source Android OS.

Moreover, the California-based search titan has seen its smartphone market share expand by a further 5.0 percent in the last three months, pushing its dominance to 38.1 percent.

The report also notes that around one in three Americans (76.8 million) now carry a touch-screen smartphone, approximately 40 percent of owners are regular App users, and more than 25 percent enjoy playing videogames on their nimble handsets.
