As promised, technology and gadget specialist Apple Inc. has this week provided invited representatives of the media with a sneak preview of its upcoming iPhone v3.0 operating system and the myriad new features it will bring with it.
Unveiled on Tuesday, the next major update to the operating platform powering Apple’s iconic touch-screen smartphone will, according to the Cupertino-based company, provide iPhone users with access to well in excess of 100 new contributing elements.
The much-rumoured inclusion of a copy and paste tool is one of the more notable new additions, which, while supporting simple text, HTML blocks, and photographic images, will also provide cross-application functionality and a handy ‘shake to cancel’ function.
Another fresh point of attraction sees the introduction of “push notification” for providing users with a handset announcement whenever they receive a new e-mail or application updates.
Personal e-mail composition is also set for improvement thanks to the ability to compose messages in landscape mode, which will present a more complete and clearly defined touch-screen keyboard.
Then there’s Apple’s increased focus on social components through the rollout of peer-to-peer networking, which will allow users to wirelessly connect and interact with other iPhone owners across a variety of software applications and specially designed games.
Beyond the wealth of new features clearly created to enhance the iPhone’s overall market appeal, Apple has also revealed it is opening its smartphone up for compatibility with all manner of third-party accessories – including medical devices.
Other features showcased by Apple and a long line of contributing developers included the sending of multiple photos, new audio file and texting tools, voice memo capabilities, and a more synch-friendly calendar.
The official v3.0 update will arrive in the summer. It will be a free download for existing iPhone owners while iPod Touch owners will be required to pay $9.95 USD.
