As expected, gadget specialist Apple Inc. has used its invitation-only media event in San Francisco to officially unveil a revamped version of its non-telephonic iPod Touch handset.

Set to hit retail next week, the latest iPod Touch model comes in storage capacities of 8GBs, 32GBs and 64GBs, and stands apart from previous iterations thanks to the inclusion of a front-facing camera (to enable FaceTime), a three-axis gyroscope, and the same retina display and Apple-made A4 processor used in the iPhone 4.

Other features on the fourth-generation iPod Touch include version 4.1 of the iOS mobile operating system, and a rear-facing HD camera that, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, will allow users to not only shoot high-definition video but also edit it directly on the handset.

The 8GB iPod Touch will sell for $229 USD, while the 32GB version will cost $299 USD and the larger 64GB model will be attached to a price tag of $399 USD.

Other refreshed products announced by Apple at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts include a fourth-generation iPod Shuffle and a new iPod Nano.

The iPod Shuffle, which offers 2GBs of storage and 15 hours of operation, boasts buttons, voice controls and support for music playlists. It will sell for just $49 USD.

Meanwhile, the new 46 percent smaller Nano now comes with a multi-touch display (no more click wheel) and 24 hours of single-charge battery life. Available in storage sizes of 8GBs and 16GBs, the iPod costs $149 USD and $179 USD respectively.
