With the associated bloatware of Vista (almost) a thing of the past thanks to the critical applause that met a streamlined Windows 7, software titan Microsoft has said Windows 8 should be ready for release in 2012.

“As we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming,” said Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer during a developer conference in Tokyo. “As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8.”

Going slightly further than merely teasing the great unwashed as to when Windows 8 will appear, Ballmer also said Redmond’s next operating system will run on slate devices, tablet computers, PCs, and other devices with a variety of form factors.

Clearly keen to maintain the positive momentum garnered by Windows in recent times, it’s more than likely that Ballmer & Co. will throw out yet more tech morsels regarding Windows, its expanded use of HTML and JavaScript, and the recently acquired Skype platform during next week’s D: All Things Digital conference in California.

News of Windows 8's upcoming arrival comes as Microsoft today prepares to release Windows Phone 7.5, a major platform upgrade expected to give users an improved Web experience and increased support for Microsoft Office.
