Online dating website BeautifulPeople is back in the news this week after it dumped 30,000 new members who were deemed to be too ugly to use the contentious service.
The flood of unwanted and apparently substandard new members came about after BeautifulPeople was struck by the appropriately named ‘Shrek virus’, which disabled the site-wide voting system that allows existing members to vote on incoming applications.
“We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting,” explained site boss Greg Hodge in a statement.
“We responded immediately, repairing the damage from the Shrek virus and putting every new member back into the rating module for a legitimate and democratic vote. The result is that we have lost over 30,000 recent members.”
According to Hodge, the company is experiencing “sincere regret” regarding the “unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site and who believed, albeit for a short time, that they were beautiful.”
“It must have been a bitter pill to swallow, but better to have had a slice of heaven than never to have tasted it at all,” he said.
Although BeautifulPeople has not yet located the origin of the mysterious Shrek virus, a spokesperson has indicated that the matter is being investigated internally as it was likely created by a disgruntled former employee.
