Here’s a piece of decidedly bad news for hopeful PlayStation 3 owners currently throwing envious glances in the direction of BioWare’s critically acclaimed Mass Effect 2: the Canadian developer has quashed mounting rumours that the sci-fi sequel is coming to Sony’s powerhouse console.
Speaking through the studio’s official forum, BioWare community coordinator Chris Priestly has indicated that persistent rumours pertaining to a PlayStation 3 port are unfounded and that the Mass Effect series will remain exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC formats.
Speculation regarding a possible cross-platform conversion sprang up recently when specific code referencing Sony’s home console was spotted in the game’s code – something Priestly was quick to dismiss as a detail relating to the cross-platform nature of Mass Effect 2’s use of Unreal Engine 3.
According to Priestly, similar PlayStation 3 code connecting the console to the original Mass Effect via Unreal Engine was responsible for causing the exact same rumour when the first game was released in late 2007.
In closing his comments on the matter – and locking the forum thread in the process – Priestly simply stated that: “Mass Effect is for the PC and Xbox 360.”
Hard cheese, PlayStation 3 owners… but at least you get to gloat about the exclusivity of Uncharted 2 and the upcoming Heavy Rain.
