Not content using the CES spotlight to offer up its first Xperia smartphone sans Ericsson, Japanese electronics giant Sony has also provided a tantalizing glimpse at its new ‘Crystal LED display’ technology.

Crystal LED display TVs are expected to deliver startling imagery thanks to their utilization of some six million on-screen LEDs, which differ markedly from the light-emitting diodes used in many of today’s flatscreen sets to backlight LCD pixels.

According to Sony chief executive Howard Stringer, the emergence of Crystal LED will see consumers benefiting from “super contrast and superwide color gamut” through their televisions.

Sony has not yet said when (or even if) its Crystal LED TVs will be making an official entry into the retail market, but the 55-inch prototype presently running at CES has certainly been wowing attendees.

In related news, LG and Samsung are busy pushing a more definite evolution of at-home television technology via their respective 55-inch OLED sets, both of which should be available before the close of 2012.
