Following on from last week’s brief report regarding the bold “world’s thinnest tablet” claim offered up by Toshiba, the Japanese electronics giant has now unveiled a device that ably supports its grand boast.

Moreover, with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) due to officially open its doors tomorrow, Toshiba has moved to stoke the fires of intrigue by thrusting its rather lovely looking Excite X10 tablet into the spotlight. We consider ourselves suitably intrigued.

Beyond its spacious 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen and brushed magnesium alloy rear casing, the X10 is notable for its incredibly svelte physical profile of 0.3 inches (approx. 7.6mm) and an almost imperceptible shoulder weight of just 1.2 pounds (approx. 0.54kg).

In terms of hardware, Toshiba’s super-skinny X10 tablet is powered by a nimble dual-core 1.2GHz TI OMAP processor, in combination with 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity (no 3G), and Google’s Android operating system (likely hitting retail with Honeycomb v3.2 before later updating to Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0).

Other fixtures and fittings in place to lure prospective buyers include, a screen resolution of 1280x800, a rear-facing 5.0 mega-pixel camera, a front-facing 2.0 mega-pixel sensor for video chat, and port support for microUSB, miniHDMI out, and microSD.

Expect the Excite X10 to hit tech outlets across the United States before the close of Q1. No word yet on pricing, although we’d hope to see it retailing for less than $499 USD to keep it safely betwixt the cheapo Kindle Fire and upper-tier iPad.

Update: Ouch, we've just been informed that the Excite X10 will have a starting price of $530 USD (16GBs). Good luck tempting folks away from the iPad3 with THAT price, Toshiba.
