Child Pad: More for pennywise parents than tech-savvy kids

When you’ve seen perplexed toddlers swiping their fingers across print images and conventional televisions, it quickly becomes clear that today’s kids are well versed when it comes to cutting edge technology.

It’s therefore somewhat hard to believe that slightly older children—those swayed be peer pressure and brand allegiance—will be drawn towards anything other than tablet devices emblazoned with a certain piece of fruit.

Regardless, device maker Archos is offering up the Child Pad, which, while not as obviously desirable as the aforementioned fruity computer, only costs $129 USD—which is a price drop of almost $400 USD.

Although it may only cost $129 USD, the Child Pad comes with specs that belie its pricing, such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen, a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and version 4.0 of Google Android (Ice Cream Sandwich)

It also comes equipped with a specially designed kid-friendly user interface, easy-to-use parental controls, and pre-loaded videogame titles such as Angry Birds, Flight Frenzy, and Pig Rush.

Likely to appeal more to cash-strapped parents, the Child Pad doesn’t allow users to access the Google Market. However, it will connect to the AppsLib Kids App Store, which carries 10,000 titles covering games, books, comics and sport-based platforms.

While we applaud the idea of launching a cheap tablet for kids, we can’t help but suggests pennywise parents consider striking a compromise by opting for Archos 70b, a 7.0-inch tablet that comes with a nimble 1.2GHz processor and 8GBs of data storage.
