Cisco's Flip camcorder gets a Slide HD revamp

Mmm, it's purdy! Image: Cisco.
At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking the above device is a slide-out mobile phone without the QWERTY keyboard. In fact, it’s Cisco’s new Slide HD, the latest entrant to its popular line of Flip camcorders.
As compact and palm friendly as any other Flip device, the Slide HD differs insofar as it offers up a generous 3.0-inch sliding touchscreen for more comfortable tabletop playback – the screen slides flat when the camera is being used to record live footage.
In terms of core specifications, the Slide HD is something of a sassy wolf in sheep’s clothing. For example, beyond the obvious aesthetic differences, it offers virtually the same camera performance as a Flip Mino HD, which means 720p video capture and (still) no image stabilisation.
However, storage capacity on the Slide HD is superior thanks to the inclusion of 16GBs of space, while the camera will pull in four hours of standard video and 12 hours of compressed footage on a single charge.
Other contributing features include HDMI-out for optional big-screen playback on a high-definition TV, stereo speakers, and also a handy headphone jack.
Sadly, in a consumer electronics world that panders to camera enthusiasts by offering affordable point-and-shoot compacts equipped with HD video capture functionality, we’re left a little unsure as to whether the Slide HD’s price of $279 USD will sway many.
That being said, it is rather pretty, and pretty sells… just ask Apple.
