Widely viewed as the granddaddy of first-person multiplayer shooters, PC classic Counter Strike has certainly provided mag after mag of inspiration for many subsequent videogame hits.

And, keen to prove there’s still plenty of stopping power in Counter Strike, original series developer Valve Software (Half-Life, Portal) has announced its plan to release a brand new expansion pack for the game.

According to Valve, Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) is being created in conjunction with Hidden Path Entertainment (Counter Strike: Source) and will be unleashed during the early part of 2012 on PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

In terms of content, Counter Strike fans can expect to enjoy peppering opponents with hot lead via a selection of new multiplayer maps and game modes—along with a fresh slew of kick-tastic weaponry.

The critically acclaimed software developer has not yet said if Global Offensive will arrive on all four platforms simultaneously, or on PC and Mac first and consoles at a later date.

Newell & Co. are also keeping quiet as to whether purchasing will be limited to physical retail disc or spread via download—or both.

The original version of Counter Strike came to prominence after appearing as a mod addition to the hugely popular Half-Life.

Fans of the ‘one free man’ loved the military action so much that Valve expanded the mod into a freestanding title in its own right.
