Although pancreatic cancer robbed the world of Steve Jobs far too early in life (56), his influence where the creation of groundbreaking consumer electronic devices is concerned looks set to continue for many years to come.
Specifically, UK newspaper The Daily Mail suggests that Apple’s former chief executive crafted a number of gadget designs for new products before his death—which should help keep the Cupertino-based giant at the head of the tech pack for the foreseeable future.
According to the report, Jobs had been hard at work revising new versions of several existing Apple platforms—including the likes of the iPod music and multimedia player, the iPhone smartphone, the iPad tablet computer, and the iconic Macbook computer line.
The next Apple device to roll onto retail shelves is the iPhone 4S, a tweaked update of the iPhone 4 that comes complete with the same A5 processor powering the iPad 2 and voice-activated navigational commands via Siri technology.
U.S. telecoms titan AT&T has said demand for the smartphone has been “extraordinary” and that more than 200,000 prospective buyers have already logged pre-orders for the upcoming handset.
And AT&T accounts for only one of the three major mobile operators that will be carrying Apple’s iPhone update. Verizon Wireless and Spring Nextel will also be offering the device, but neither has yet revealed their pre-order unit sales.
The iPhone 4S is set to arrive on October 14.
