Although Sniper: Ghost Warrior was widely panned by the videogame critics when it arrived back in June of 2010, Eurogamer has revealed that the game sold well enough to justify development of a sequel.

Now, before you click away in disgust, bear in mind that Polish development studio City Interactive is using CryEngine 3 to power its surprise sequel—a notable plus point considering CryEngine 3 chews the numbers for Crytek’s cutting-edge shooter Crysis 2.

Further to that, City Interactive recently strengthened its ranks by employing Stuart Black (he of Black and Bodycount fame) as the creative director of its newly opened London studio.

We’ll reserve passing judgement on the promise those contributing aspects bring to the project, but we may well chime in again when City Interactive launches the PlayStation 3 version of Sniper: Ghost Warrior on February 8.

According to City Interactive, the revised PlayStation 3 game will include “fully upgraded gameplay” along with single-player missions and multiplayer modes exclusive to Sony’s platform.

“Sniper: Ghost Warrior was our most ambitious project to date and although it was extremely well-received by players, we wanted to ensure that the PS3 version took the franchise to a higher level,” commented studio boss Marek Tyminski in an official statement.

As things stand, the Xbox 360 version of Sniper: Ghost Warrior has a Metacritic average of 45/100 across 39 reviews, while the PC release has an average of 55/100 over 22 reviews.
