Despite amassing largely mediocre critical appraisal, first-person invasion of America epic Homefront has apparently sold enough copies at retail to merit a second shot at glory.

Yet, beyond our initial rush of incredulity, we must admit collective interest spiked upon discovering that acclaimed German developer Crytek will be at the helm of said sequel.

For those who don’t know, Crytek is the studio responsible for creating Crysis and Crysis 2—both of which are held in high regard where first-person shooters are concerned.

The sequel doesn’t have an official name yet but will be developed by Crytek’s UK division—formally known as Free Radical—which most recently crafted the multiplayer component of Crysis 2.

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ,” commented Crytek chief executive Cevat Yerli.

“We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game,” he added.

Homefront 2 (as we’re calling it) will be released on PC and “home console platforms”, which likely means a direct sequel to the original game on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Not that we’d dare label this particular franchise as a poison chalice, but it’s perhaps worth noting that Homefront developer Kaos Studios was shuttered by THQ shortly after release.
