Finally, a REAL game for the iPhone. Image: Escalation Studios.
As impressive as PC and console first-person shooters have become in terms of beautiful presentation and intricate gameplay, do you ever find yourself out and about longing for a worthy mobile iteration of such shooting excellence? If so, then legendary game designer John Carmack might have just what your eager thumbs are craving.
More pointedly, having made his name with development studio id Software and its groundbreaking DOOM franchise, next week will see Carmack bringing DOOM Resurrection to Apple’s iconic iPhone via its massively popular online App Store.
Established reputation aside, the game has been built on 3D artwork and textures initially used for the PC version of DOOM III (2004), which should mean the new iPhone and iPod Touch offering provides mobile gamers with a standout experience and visuals further bolstered by a 30fps frame rate.
According to online media magazine Venture Beat, the App Store title is the “pet project” of id guru Carmack, who has spent the last six months working on the game alongside a team of developers at Escalation Studios (Samba De Amigo, Dr. Awesome).
Following on after the original storyline of DOOM III, the new mobile DOOM Resurrection will place the player into the boots of a lone Marine stranded on a remote Martian research facility overrun by demonic creatures.
DOOM Resurrection will sport a total of eight full levels delivering around five hours of interactive gameplay. Also, while built to run on the iPhone’s current operating system, Carmack and the team hope to take advantage of various iPhone v3.0 features when the new software platform is officially released by Cupertino-based Apple.
