It was only last week that The Tech Herald was echoing Google’s proud boast that some 550,000 Android-powered devices are being activated around the world every day. Apparently that figure is not accurate.

Sadly, for those hoping to see Google’s march of dominance crocked by an unexpected pothole, said figure is actually some way short of the mark as opposed to an overshoot.

Specifically, Google is claiming that daily Android activations are now in excess of 700,000, which means momentum has leaped by almost quarter of a million since hitting 500,000 in June.

In an effort to deflect any scrutiny or questioning regarding its figures, Google has been quick to say that each device is only counted once and “activation” refers to a user going into a store, buying a device, and adding it to the network via a wireless service.

The Google Android operating system is presently active on more than 200 million smartphone and tablet devices around the world.
