Don’t look now, but after enduring months of persistently poor market performance, newly released shipment figures suggest many leading personal computer manufacturers are finally moving clear of the credit crunch.

Specifically, IDC reports that global PC shipments for the third quarter of 2009 have grown by 2.0 percent, which marks a much-needed upturn given a first-quarter decline of 6.8 percent and a second-quarter fall of 2.4 percent.

Of those PC makers registering the most benefit from the quarterly increase, IDC’s research shows Acer as the big winner thanks to a huge shipment boost of 25.6 percent. And, what’s more, Acer’s success has also seen it stealing top spot amongst rival manufacturers as previous leader Dell was revealed to have suffered a shipment decline of 8.4 percent.

According to IDC, only the Japanese market failed to surpass Q3 expectations, while computer shipments in general have been bolstered by the continuing growth attributed to portable systems – and particularly budget, Web-centric Netbook platforms.

“Despite a continuing mix of gloom and caution on the economic front, the PC market continues to rebound quickly,” outlined IDC analyst Loren Loverde in an official statement.

With the likes of Lenovo and Toshiba also enjoying improved global shipment figures, Dell’s apparent decision to resist price cuts combined with an inability to match rivals in catering to consumer needs during the important ‘back to school’ period, leaving it as the only top-five player to be stuck with ailing shipments.
