The car does kind of paper over whether the game is any good. Or is that the point? Image: YouTube.
The DiRT series has, for a number of years, been a respected racing property that’s never quite gathered enough momentum to threaten the Gran Turismos and Need for Speeds of the videogame world in terms of critical acclaim or sales success.
Bearing that in mind, long-standing DiRT developer Codemasters has this week announced a DiRT 3 special edition retail bundle that will either grant the series an air of ‘must have’ exclusivity or perhaps alienate some of its established fan base.
If the former result is attained, it will be because racing fans everywhere—regardless of their gaming preferences—will be drawn to DiRT’s pedigree along with Collector’s Edition goodies such as the fully remote controlled Ken Block Gymkhana rallying Fiesta.
However, the latter result may emerge amid cries of “expensive gimmickry” given that the DiRT 3 Collector’s Edition comes attached to a rather hefty price of $299.99 USD. The game itself costs a mere $59.99 USD if purchased without added remote controlled frills.
For those of you drawn inexorably by the prospect of weaving a little rally car through tiny cones or over hastily built jumps, the Gymkhana Fiesta comes fully assembled and boasts a TQ 2.4GHz High Output radio system with Traxxas Link, along with a Velineon 380 motor, VXL-3m ESC, a 7.2 volt NiMH battery and charger, and a ProGraphix chassis.
The DiRT 3 Collector’s Edition will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this coming May 24.
