A 30-year-old Texas man, Aron Embry, said he was making a call on his Motorola Droid 2 when the phone allegedly exploded. Embry told KDFW (Fox 4 News), that he heard a loud pop just before his ear started bleeding.
“At first I didn’t know what to think. I was in the process of getting into my vehicle. I heard a pop, I didn’t feel any pain initially. I pulled the phone down. I felt something dripping. I realized that it probably was blood,” Embry told Fox 4 News.
He went on to add that, “I went into the house, and as I got into the bathroom and once I got to the mirror and saw it, it was only then I [kind of] looked at my phone and noticed the screen had appeared to burst outward.”
According to the Fox report, he drove to see his wife at the school where she works to show her and to have her take pictures. Initially she thought he had been in a car crash. After several hours in an ER, he was stitched up and sent on his way. Luckily, he suffered no permanent injuries to his ear.
Embry is planning to consult with an attorney, as he has no health insurance he told Fox, so he is looking to Motorola for help. Ironically, Embry and his wife confirmed that after all the problems, the exploding phone still works.
In a statement, Motorola said that they plan to reach out to him, and will investigate the incident.
“Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers…all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety.”
Fox 4 News contacted a local phone repair shop, and the GM, Daniel Harrison, said that from based on the video images of the phone, it looks like the problem was “user caused.”
