Seeing as Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Online and Sony Pictures having all succumbed to damaging hack attacks in recent weeks, the Japanese industry giant is probably keen to put a smile back on consumer faces.
Bearing that in mind, Sony has this week used the annual E3 Expo in Los Angeles to formally detail its upcoming Next Generation Portable videogame system, which it has now officially dubbed PlayStation Vita (Latin for ‘Life’).
The first full successor to the original PlayStation Portable (PSP), the new PlayStation Vita will be available at two price points: $249 USD for those prospective buyers happy with just Wi-Fi connectivity, and $299 USD for those who prefer to use the snappier 3G network.
According to Sony, the Vita will be carried exclusively by U.S. telecommunications provider AT&T and will also come equipped with front and rear cameras, dual analogue control sticks, a front-facing touchscreen display, and a rear-facing touch panel.
Looking to draw disgruntled PlayStation users back into the fold post-hack, Sony has also unveiled a high-definition 3D display, which will be bundled alongside PS3 sci-fi sequel Resistance 3 later in the year for $499 USD.
Tailored specifically for gamers, the display will deliver versatile split-screen functionality that enables both players to enjoy full 3D action on their own screens. And, if the added third dimension doesn’t float their boats, one—or both—can revert to playing in conventional 2D.
Finally, if you’re a PlayStation customer not yet sold on 3D, Sony has announced plans to roll out more than 100 games with 3D functionality over the next 12 months.
