Building on the critical and consumer success of its award-winning post-apocalyptic game Fallout 3, renowned software developer Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion) has this week revealed a brand new standalone release for the franchise that’s expected to arrive in 2010.
Already extending the sprawling gameplay longevity of Fallout 3 through a series of special downloadable episodes, the newly announced Fallout: New Vegas will not be a direct sequel, but rather a full retail title of its own supported by the same engine as Fallout 3.
“This is not a sequel to Fallout 3,” confirmed Bethesda vice president Pete Hines regarding the game, “this is just another Fallout title.”
While little is presently known about the new franchise entry or its narrative thread, its development is being helmed by Obsidian Entertainment (Alpha Protocol, Never Winter Nights 2) and its focus on Las Vegas is likely to build on the foundations and themes set by Fallout 3’s placement in the ruins of Washington D.C.
What is known at this point is that Fallout: New Vegas will hold true to the RPG genre and will be heading for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Games for Windows some time next year.
Maintaining the established momentum of Fallout 3, Bethesda is set to unleash the game’s third downloadable expansion Broken Steel in the next few weeks, which promises the arrival of yet more new action gameplay, weapons and enemies.
