Having already hooked hordes of budding horticulturalists via popular social networking service Facebook, the ‘plant it, grow it, and harvest it’ appeal of Farmville is now heading towards the iPhone and iPod Touch via Apple’s App Store.
Set to build on the more than 80 million Facebook users already addicted to running their virtual farms in a real-time simulation, developer Zynga officially announced Farmville’s transition to Apple-branded handsets during this week’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
“Farmville is our most popular game and we’re excited to bring it to the most popular gaming platform in the world,” enthused Zynga CEO Mark Pincus during the event – though we think Pincus might find the world’s most popular gaming platform is actually the Nintendo DS.
Pedantic observations aside, the official Farmville iPhone app will grant existing players yet more access thanks to in-app purchases and the ability to synch up with other platforms – such as Facebook – while also allowing for the upkeep of friends lists and the deliver of details regarding game progress.
Neither a formal release date nor a price point have been issued by for the app at this time, although the developer has indicated it will be ready in time to coincide with the anniversary of Farmville’s original release – which would suggest an arrival on or around June 19.
