It’s been a very, very long time coming, but Japanese videogame giant Square Enix has finally begun issuing regional release dates and bundle details for its new and eagerly anticipated role-playing game Final Fantasy XIII.

More pointedly, expectant PlayStation 3 gamers in Japan will be clambering desperately to hand over 8,800 yen for a copy of the latest Final Fantasy when it hits retail stores this coming December 17 for Sony’s powerhouse platform.

Arriving a week ahead of Christmas, the release date is clearly a tactical move that will help drive the game’s sales (not that Final Fantasy XIII will need the extra help given its flagship status) while also further fuelling consumer interest in the recently launched PlayStation 3 Slim.

Enriching appeal yet further, buyers in Japan will also have access to a PlayStation 3 Slim hardware bundle that comes complete with a copy of Final Fantasy XIII.

Since the original Final Fantasy videogame was released in 1987, the long-running adventure series has captured the imagination of gamers everywhere, amassed a formidable 85 million unit sales around the world, and even spawned big budget movie adaptations.

Although releasing as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in Japan, Final Fantasy XIII will also be launching on Microsoft’s rival Xbox 360 system in North America and Europe when Square Enix expands the game’s regional reach during the first quarter of 2010.
