The slick and dependable Volkswagen Polo, last year’s World Car of the Year, will soon be driven from the spotlight of acclaim following the announcement of 2011’s three vehicular finalists.
Unveiled at a press conference during this week’s Geneva International Motor Show, those cars are the Audi A8, the BMW 5 Series, and the Nissan Leaf—all of which are worthy candidates.
If your favourite car of 2011 didn’t make the final three, perhaps it received an honourable mention via the award’s top-ten shortlist, which includes the Audi A1, BMW X3, Jaguar XJ, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes Benz SLS, Porsche Cayenne and the Volvo S60/V60.
The overall winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 21, after being selected by an international jury comprised of 66 “top-level” automotive journalists, each of which has been appointed by the World Car Steering Committee.
Beyond the coveted World Car of the Year award, the upcoming New York event will also honour the 2011 World Performance Car and the 2011 World Green Car.
The three finalists in each of those respective categories are the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, the Porsche 911 Turbo, and the Nissan Leaf, the Chevrolet Volt and the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition.
