Although more likely to attract software developers than general web users, open-source specialist Mozilla Corp. has this week unveiled the new beta iteration of its upcoming Firefox 5 browser.
Clearly focused on background tweaks, some of the enhancements include added support for CSS animations, improved canvas, JavaScript, memory and networking performance, and increased support for web standards such as HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas.
“The latest version of Firefox includes more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements that make it easier to discover and use all of the innovative features in Firefox,” outlined Mozilla’s official blog.
Other features packed into the Firefox 5 download include improved spell checking, better desktop environment integration for Linux users, and increased background tab performance thanks to setTimeout and setInterval being “clamped” to 1000ms.
The development channel switcher initially introduced in prior iterations of Firefox has been dumped by this particular beta platform, while WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures and the Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to boost discoverability.
