Last week we here at The Tech Herald reported (somewhat sceptically) on rumours surrounding the possible development of a new tablet computer by smartphone specialist HTC.

Although details were scant at the time, a fresh burst of information has since emerged that adds a smidge of credence to the initial nugget of unsubstantiated speculation thrown out by our friends over at DigiTimes.

More pointedly, Norwegian site Amobil cites an unnamed insider in its claim that the HTC Flyer tablet will carry version 2.3 of Google Android (Gingerbread), a 7.0-inch capacitive touch-screen display, a pixel resolution of 1024x600, and the HTC Sense UI.

It will also apparently include the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 utilized in HTC’s critically applauded Desire HD smartphone, along with 4GBs of ROM, 1GB of RAM, a front-facing 1.3 mega-pixel camera, and a rear-facing 5.0 mega-pixel camera.

Other contributing aspects should see the Flyer equipped with stylus-assisted interfacing, DLNA video streaming, and support for HDMI out.

If current whispers are to be believed, HTC’s virgin entrant into the tablet arena should be ready for retail in the U.S. by March, with the European market set to receive it in April.

Considering that Motorola’s Xoom tablet is scheduled to arrive during the same window and comes with the 'properly' tablet-optimised v3.0 of Google Android (Honeycomb), we’ll be a little disappointed if the Flyer does indeed come with v2.3 of the operating system—as Amobil suggests.

Expect to learn more about the HTC Flyer during next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
