In a move designed to boost its exposure and appeal alongside the Internet’s more prominent social networks, search titan Google has now begun allowing all teenagers to sign up to its Google+ service.

With some 90 million members already providing traction for Google’s network, the decision to drop minimum account creation age from 18 to 13 brings Google+ in line with the likes of Facebook and Twitter—both of which enforce the same minimum age policy.

Of course, by lowering the age range associated with Google+, its creators are enabling the platform to tap into some of the Internet’s most dedicated users, which is likely to result in a significant and sustained member boost.

“Teens and young adults are the most active Internet users on the planet,” outlined Bradley Horowitz, vice president of product management at Google+, in an official statement.

“They’re also human beings who enjoy spending time with friends and family,” he added. “Put these two things together, and it’s clear that teens will increasingly connect online.”

According to Google, it wants to help teenagers build “meaningful connections” online while also providing its younger members with an array of features that “foster safety alongside self-expression”.

By way of drumming up teen interest in Google+, the California-based Web giant has also announced a number of new Google+ Pages, which include those attributed to Teen Vogue, Glee, Ashley Tisdale, Cody Simpson, Big Time Rush, The Hunger Games, and Lea Michelle.
