After successfully bringing its Nexus smartphone to bear on the mobile phone sector, it would appear technology titan Google is now preparing to launch an attack against the tablet market.
That’s according to Google boss Eric Schmidt, who this week told Italian newspaper Corrielle della Sea that marketing for the tablet device will start before the close of 2012’s second quarter.
Although Schmidt offered nothing specific where details are concerned, he did promise the ultra-portable touchscreen computer will give customers access to a device “of the highest quality”.
Industry watchers have reacted to the news by suggesting Google’s virgin foray into the world of tablet computing will likely come attached to the aforementioned Nexus branding.
Alex Spektor of Strategic Analytics has shown a willingness to take a vague punt at the tablet’s specifications, offering that he expects processing muscle and screen resolution that outperforms Apple’s iPad2.
However, he also said the current saturation of tablets powered by Google’s Android operating software will probably mean the Nexus tablet platform won’t be able to compete with the iPad on sales.
