As 2010 begins to set behind the horizon, micro-blogging service Twitter has revealed the year’s most popular topics to grace its Overall Top Trends list.
Putting aside recent accusations of censorship regarding hashtags #wikileaks and #cablegate—which Twitter has vehemently denied—the devastating ‘Gulf Oil Spill’ topped the chart, closely followed by the ‘FIFA World Cup’ and director Christopher Nolan’s Hollywood brainteaser ‘Inception’.
Rounding out the top five were the tragic events of the ‘Haiti Earthquake’ and the howling ‘Vuvuzela’ horn that terrorised the ears of soccer fans around the globe during World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
Tightening up with a more Tech Herald focus, the ‘Apple iPad’ topped Twitter’s list of Technology Trends, closely followed by ‘Google Android’, the ‘Apple iOS’ operating system, the ‘Apple iPhone’ handset and record-breaking action videogame ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’.
It’s also worth noting that both the iPad and Android also made it onto the Overall Top Trends list, stealing in at sixth and seventh respectively above the likes of pop warbler ‘Justin Bieber’, money-making machine ‘Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows’ and ‘Pulpo Paul’.
