When it comes to the burgeoning tablet market, challengers have come (Samsung Galaxy Tab) and challengers have gone (Motorola Xoom), but none have put more than a cosmetic dent in the dominance of Apple’s iPad.
However, here comes computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP), puffing out its corporate chest and spouting unbridled smack-talk for all to hear regarding the chances of its upcoming TouchPad.
According to a report in The Telegraph, HP’s EMEA personal systems group boss Eric Cador has announced during a press conference in Cannes that: “In the tablet world we’re going to become better than number one. We call it number one plus.”
Bold words indeed, especially considering the market lead already established by Apple’s hot-selling tablet platform.
“The way the user is going to look at tablets means it’s about experience,” added Cador. “The way the corporate is going to look at it is to say that its employees, who are also consumers, have got to like it and it’s got to be secure. We’re going to deliver that.”
Label us as overly cynical but, given that the TouchPad’s only obvious aspects of differentiation when compared to the iPad are the acclaimed webOS operating system and a slightly more beefy processor, we find it hard to see HP overhauling Apple’s trend-leading brand power.
The HP TouchPad is expected to arrive before the end of summer, and will be equipped with a 9.7-inch XGA capacitive display (1024x768), a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and up to 32GBs of data storage.
