In a move that nudges its Netbook technology towards the education sector, hardware manufacturer Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced the new HP Mini 100e Education Edition, a small and perfectly portable computer formed specifically for student use.

Big on practicality and productivity – but perhaps light on frills – the gently rounded corners of the Mini 100e Education Edition surround a 10.1-inch LED-backlit WSVGA display, a 92 percent of full size keyboard, and an integrated carry handle for maximised “comfort and efficiency” in the classroom and on the go.

Under the hood, the computer is equipped with a low-power Intel Atom processor (N455), the Intel NM10 Express chipset, a solid 1GB of DDR3 memory, either a 160GB hard drive or a 16GB solid state drive, and a choice of Windows XP Home, Windows 7 Starter, or SuSe Linux (SLED 11) operating systems.

“HP is committed to helping schools adapt to students’ changing needs and to creating solutions that provide better interactivity, connectivity and learning,” enthused Dan Forlenza, vice president and general manager of Business Notebooks at Hewlett-Packard.

“The HP Mini 100e is an affordable feature-rich device that helps ensure every student has the tools needed for success in their academic endeavors,” he added.

Other contributing features and functions aboard the Mini 100e Education Edition include, Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Math and Microsoft Security Essentials, along with an on-board Webcam, headphone and microphone jacks, optional WLAN connectivity, and either a three or six-cell battery for 4.5 or 8.5 hours of operation.

Available worldwide from this coming July, the Hewlett-Packard Mini 100e Education Edition will be offered on “a per deal basis” for a price of no more than $300 USD per unit.
