The seemingly unstoppable march of Android continues this week following the unveiling of the HTC Tattoo, the latest mobile phone handset to carry the increasingly popular Google-backed open source operating system (OS).

Offering itself up with customisation at its core, the recession-friendly Tattoo (or HTC Click as it’s also known) comes complete with the touch-sensitive Sense user interface and will allow users to let loose with personalisation from hardware through to software applications and other content.

“Everyone wants their own phone to feel like it was specifically made for them. The Tattoo, with HTC Sense represents an easy way to shape your own distinct mobile experience and really make it your own,” enthused Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corp. in a statement.

“The HTC Tattoo ensures that you can create the most engaging and appropriate mobile experience through simple yet powerful personalization,” he added.

Small and compact, the Tattoo lives up to its name in an aesthetic sense thanks to HTC offering up a selection of unique phone cover designs that enable users to alter their handsets on a whim to reflect mood or individual taste.

Stripping away the press release spin and getting to the all-important technical details, the HTC Tattoo comes with a Qualcomm MSM7225 processor (528MHz), a generous 2.8-inch QVGA TFT touchscreen (240 x 320), 256MBs of internal memory, and microSD expansion through to 32GBs.

Other attributes include a solid 3.2 mega pixel camera, HSDPA/WCDMA/GSM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, support for Android Market, a speakerphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and multimedia support for MP3, AAC, WAV, Windows Media Audio 9, MIDI, MPEG-4, H.264, and Windows Media Video 9.

HTC has not yet confirmed regional pricing for the Tattoo, although operators are expected to offer the handset for free (in the UK and mainland Europe) when attached to a mandatory service contract. The HTC Tattoo will hit retail this coming October.
