While we here at Tech Herald Towers have no idea why you’d ever need 4TBs of PC storage, we thought it best to report that Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) is presently offering such cavernous data space via its latest HDD platform.
Also known as the ‘CoolSpin’ drive, Japan-based Hitachi’s spacious beast runs at a stable rotation speed of 5900RPM and arrives as the newest entrant into its existing line of Deskstar hard drives.
Described as the world’s first 4TB performance drive, the 3.5-inch CoolSpin Deskstar 5K also comes with an additional 3GBs of free online storage, and enhanced energy efficiency via Hitachi’s power management features.
Beyond the whopping 4TB data allocation, the Deskstar 5K also has 32MBs of cache, a SATA III interface (6Gb/s maximum bandwidth), and a recommended retail price that’s currently swinging between $350 USD and $400 USD.
According to Hitachi, a standalone version of the drive and bulk purchases for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) should be available before the close of 2012’s first quarter.
