Blurgh… dual-core smartphone processing is so 2011. One quick look at this week’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona is proof of that as gadget manufacturers galore start pushing quad-core handsets towards the masses.

Take, for example, the new Ascend D phones from Chinese budget-friendly specialist Huawei, which utilize proprietary quad-core technology and look set to propel the company towards the more desirable end of the smartphone sector.

Both the Ascend D Quad and Ascend D Quad XL run on version 4.0 of Google’s Android operating system (a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich), and come with a 4.5-inch HD touchscreen, an 8.0 mega-pixel camera, 1080p video recording, and 8GBs of internal data storage.

Beyond using speedy K3V2 quad-core processors ranging from 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz, the Ascend line handsets will only differ internally insofar as the Quad uses an 1800mAh battery, while the Quad XL uses a 2500 mAh cell.

Although Huawei has not yet announced accompanying prices for its quad-core handsets, company chairman Richard Yu has promised they will arrive up to 50 percent cheaper than comparable smartphone devices.

Impressive. Expect to see Huawei’s Ascend Quad D processors at retail before the close of Q2.
