Sigh… Regardless of how tiresome they become, there are some rumours in the videogame world that just won’t die. More pointedly, an unnamed industry insider has told Ars Technica that a PlayStation 3 price cut and a new PlayStation 3 Slim will be official come the autumn.
Hiding behind a curtain of anonymity, the unnamed source has said availability of the 80GB version of Sony’s PlayStation 3 is petering out, with retailers apparently drawing upon only 60 days worth of remaining inventory before a marked upturn in 160GB models.
If subsequent retail momentum for the 160GB console mirrors that of the 80GB system, the source claims an unspecified hardware price cut and a new slender PlayStation 3 will be introduced by Sony during 2009’s third quarter.
Although unwilling to divulge the name of its industry “Mole”, Ars offers that its informant has “an outstanding track record for accuracy” when it comes to a nurtured reputation built on being first out of the gate with regard to the breaking of significant stories.
And, not limiting his/her industry fortune telling to just Sony’s powerhouse home console, the Mole also claims that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Pro (a.k.a. Premium), which sports a modest 20GB hard drive, will be replaced in September by the larger 120GB Elite model – which will also be subjected to a price cut.
The rumoured elevation of the 120GB Elite to Microsoft’s mainstay model comes after industry analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan suggested the Redmond-based company will concentrate its gaming focus on digital distribution during 2010 with a one terabyte (1TB) Xbox 360 system.
