Internet Explorer and Firefox keep slipping despite updates

Despite both Microsoft and Mozilla enthusiastically trumpeting recent updates to their respective web browsers, it would appear neither Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) nor Firefox 4 have been able to stop a downward trend in user interest.

Moreover, new monthly Net Applications figures for April show that Internet Explorer’s ever-declining dominance lost a further 0.81 percent (to an all-time low of 55.11 percent), while Firefox dropped two month’s of gains with a slip of 0.17 percent (to 21.63 percent).

It’s not all doom and gloom for the browser market’s major players though, with Google’s increasingly popular Chrome picking up 0.37 percent for the month (11.94 percent), while Apple’s Safari registered an upturn of 0.54 percent (7.15 percent).

Perhaps more worryingly for Microsoft is that Internet Explorer 9 is yet to convince the software giant’s user base, with only 2.41 percent of all Internet Explorer users having adopted the latest iteration.

As things stand, a whopping 33.06 percent of worldwide Internet Explorer users have chosen to remain with IE8, while 7.35 percent prefer IE7, and a stubborn 10.85 percent still prefer IE6.

That’s confidence in the product… or a distinct lack thereof.
