Is the Viliv S10 a Tabbook or a Netlet?

While industry chatter suggests Apple’s much-rumoured Tablet computing device will straddle the Netbook and notebook markets, the technology boffins at Viliv have come up with a Netbook that’s actually a Tablet – or should that be a Tablet that’s also a Netbook?

Unveiled by Korean-based manufacturer Viliv during this week’s Intel Developers Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, the new S10 ‘Blade’ platform is perhaps best described as a convertible tablet that has distinct Netbook leanings.

Qualifying the S10’s Netbook credentials, the slender and ultra-portable computing device comes equipped with a swivelling 10-inch touch-screen display, a full QWERTY keyboard, a gigabyte of RAM, and an energy efficient 1.33GHz Intel Atom mobile processor (a more performance-based 2.0GHz option will also be available).

Other contributing technical aspects include either a 60GB hard disk drive or a 32GB solid-state drive, the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system, Viliv’s ‘Shuffle’ touch interface, and connectivity through high-speed 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Also, Viliv is keen to point out that its upcoming S10 Blade convertible is capable of delivering an impressive 10 hours of mobile operation on a single battery charge – or seven hours when applied to view video content.

Tantalising as the S10 appears to be, the device pushes a tad beyond the current pricing boundaries of most Netbook devices, thanks to an expected starting price of around $500 USD.
