After surprising many in the videogame industry with the bold originality of sci-fi horror epic Dead Space – and scaring a fair amount of loose-bladdered gamers in the process – it would appear third-party publisher Electronic Arts (EA) is finally answering the call for a sequel.
More pointedly, a job listing posted online by original Dead Space developer Visceral Games (previously known as EA Redwood Shores) has revealed that development on a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed 2008 frightfest is expected to start in early 2010.
According to the listing, posted by senior recruiter Jeff Ballard, EA is looking to add a lead combat and controls designer to its expanding Dead Space (2) development team.
“[Visceral Games is] seeking a highly motivated lead combat designer for the Dead Space franchise on Xbox 360 and PS3,” the advert outlined.
“This M-rated action/shooter sequel will set new standards for an action-packed story-driven console experience,” it continued. “The game is in the later stages of pre-production, ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place.”
Although Visceral Games recently lost COO Michael Condrey and GM Glen Schofield to the greener pastures of Activision (both of whom were driving forces for the original game), Dead Space fans will be relieved to learn the same core team responsible for Isaac Clarke’s terrifying adventure are back onboard for the sequel.
Originally released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and later PC), the Dead Space experience has this week made the jump to the Nintendo Wii through Dead Space: Extraction, an on-rails shooter that provides more narrative padding for the existing story while delivering a similar thrill ride of shocks and frights.
