How very fitting. On the day Apple CEO and technology guru Steve Jobs celebrates 55 years on the planet, the Cupertino-based company’s hugely popular iTunes Store has served up its 10 billionth music download. How's that for cosmic ordering?

The significant iTunes milestone has been reached almost seven years after Apple Inc. launched its music download service, which has played a pivotal role in throwing a lifeline to the ailing music industry by re-inventing how we consume music and multimedia content.

In terms of band support, the iTunes Store has been especially kind to the career of R&B outfit Black Eyed Peas, which holds first and third place on the list of all-time popular song purchases thanks to ‘I Gotta Feeling’ and ‘Boom Boom Pow’ respectively. Separating those two tracks is Lady Gaga’s annoyingly addictive ‘Poker Face’.

Looking to fulfil a promise it made last week as the iTunes counter rolled ever onward, Apple has said one presently unknown but nevertheless very lucky iTunes user will soon be scooping a generous $10,000 USD iTunes Store gift card for purchasing the 10 billionth download.
