The last time online retailer Amazon trumpeted an official media gathering, it duly unveiled the much talked about second-generation Kindle electronic book reader.

Industry watchers are now suggesting a press conference confirmed for Wednesday morning will see Amazon rolling out a brand new Kindle reader built specifically to carry digital newspaper and magazine content.

Initially hinted at by The New York Times (NYT) earlier today, positive online chatter concerning the arrival of a big-screen version of the Kindle gathered pace soon thereafter, and has now gained some semblance of credibility following the release of official media invitations by Amazon.

“We’d like to invite you to an Amazon.com press conference scheduled for Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 am ET,” outlines the official invite. “The press conference is scheduled to take place at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University, located at 3 Spruce Street, New York City. Doors will open for registration at 9:30 am ET.”

With Plastic Logic put forth by NYT as the new Kindle’s manufacturer, some of the contributing specifications believed to be crammed into the larger iteration of Amazon’s ‘E Ink’ device include an increased physical sizing of 8.5 x 11.0 inches and perhaps even a full colour screen.
