So you want a tablet computer but you can’t stump up the cash for an Apple iPad, where should you look for an affordable alternative. How about Kmart? That’s right, everyone’s favourite budget-conscious retailer is to begin offering a tablet device that’s pocket friendly beyond just physical sizing.

Moreover, according to a Kmart flyer that popped up online this week, the American chain is planning to sell Augen’s Gentouch78 tablet from July 31, for an admittedly tempting $150 USD.

While certainly not an iPad in terms of performance and allure, the Gentouch78 may prove a hit with pennywise tech lovers thanks to its 7.0-inch TFT display (800 x 480), touch-screen functionality, 800MHz processor, 256MBs of DDR2 RAM, 2GBs of internal memory (expandable to 16GBs via SD and MMC), and the inclusion of version 2.1 of Google’s Android operating system.

Indeed, Kmart’s offering certainly promises value for money, not least because it includes Wi-Fi connectivity, a full Web browser, multimedia options via MP3, WMA, FLAC, and AAC, support for eBook formats such as ePUB, PDF, HTML and Text, USB access, a rechargeable lithium battery, and a bundled leather carry case.

While we here at The Tech Herald freely admit that the Gentouch78 is, were we drawing vehicular comparisons, akin to a cheap and modest compact as opposed to an expensive and sleek SUV… there are an awful lot of cheap and modest compacts on the roads during these times of financial austerity.
